A handheld XRF has three jobs in exploration: measure the commodity directly, map lithology & alteration, and trace pathfinder dispersion through soil, till and sediment. This tool shows how those jobs change across 30 deposit systems and 7 sampling media — and which elements are worth negotiating onto the factory calibration before the analyzer ships.

Reading the element chart

The 3–5× rule

An element sitting at its stated LOD is merely detectable. For confident vectoring on rough, heterogeneous field surfaces you want concentrations roughly 3–5× the real-world LOD — which is why the same element can be a superb vector in one deposit system and useless in the next.

Sources & framing

Deposit signatures follow the USGS mineral-deposit-model series (porphyry Cu, Carlin, VMS, W-skarn, sandstone & unconformity U, LCT pegmatite and related models). SciAps-published X-555 REE detection figures (120 s, OREAS standards) inform the REE bands. Land outline derived from Natural Earth / world-atlas.
